Qwickly Attendance for Canvas: Setting up LTI 1.3 placement with default hidden state

The setup guide for Qwickly Attendance LTI 1.3 in Canvas describes a setup process which creates a placement which is visible by default in a course navigation. This article describes an alternate setup which will set the links to be hidden by default in a course's navigation, thus allowing Admins and Instructors the ability to enable the link at a later point of their choosing.

First, if there has been an LTI key setup for Qwickly Attendance before, it should be deleted. Note: Please be careful to ONLY delete the LTI Key, DO NOT DELETE the API Key. The LTI Key will have a plug icon in the "type" column (screenshot below):

When you delete the older LTI Key, it's existing placements in the course will also be deleted.

Next, you can click on "+ Developer Key" and select "+ LTI Key". Enter the following values:

• Key name: Qwickly Attendance
• Method: Enter URL
• JSON URL: https://www.qwickly.tools/attendance/lti_setup/canvas/?hidden=True
  • If you are using Qwickly in different regions, replace "www.qwickly.tools" with "uk.qwickly.tools" or "au.qwickly.tools"
• Press save

This should create a new LTI key with a Key ID (the ID found in the details column) Copy this LTI Key ID and first update this ID in the Qwickly dashboard for your Instance's 1.3 Attendance deployment (screenshot below):

Next, we will use this LTI Key ID to create our tool deployment.

Go to your Canvas Instance > Admin > Settings > Apps > View App Configuration > click on "+ App"

Select Configuration type "by Client ID" and enter this LTI Key ID. 

Once submitted, this should add Qwickly Attendance as an installed app in your system. Find this app and select "Deployment ID". Insert this deployment ID in the Qwickly Dashboard 1.3 Instance Keys:

Press submit to save your updated keys.

The tool should now have a deployment in your courses, with the link hidden by default.

To unhide the link, go to your canvas course > settings > navigation > Drag "Qwickly Attendance" from the hidden links section to the visible links section.

Once done, press save. This will make the Attendance link visible in the course.
